Onshore with offshore commissioning support
Reports To
Electrical Engineering Manager / Renewable Energy Director
Position Overview
The Battery Energy Storage Engineer (Offshore) designs and engineers offshore battery energy storage systems (BESS) for applications including offshore platform power optimization, wind farm output smoothing, microgrid support, and electrification of offshore operations. This role bridges power systems engineering with the unique challenges of deploying battery technology in offshore environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design offshore BESS systems including battery module selection, BMS architecture, power conversion systems, and thermal management
- Perform electrical system studies including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and harmonic analysis for offshore BESS integration
- Develop BESS control strategies for offshore applications including peak shaving, frequency regulation, and renewable integration
- Specify BESS equipment for offshore deployment including marine-grade enclosures, HVAC, and fire suppression systems
- Prepare safety cases and risk assessments for offshore BESS including thermal runaway, fire, and explosion risk mitigation
- Coordinate with structural and marine engineers on BESS module layout, weight distribution, and vessel/platform integration
- Develop commissioning and testing procedures for offshore BESS installation and energization
- Review vendor proposals and technical data sheets for BESS components and integrated systems
- Assess emerging battery technologies (solid-state, flow batteries, sodium-ion) for offshore application suitability
- Ensure BESS designs comply with applicable offshore standards (DNV-OS-J201, IEC 62619, DNVGL-RP-0043) and regulatory requirements
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Power, or Energy Engineering; Master's degree preferred
- Certifications: BOSIET/FOET (for offshore support); Chartered Engineer status preferred; high-voltage safety certification advantageous
- Experience: Minimum 5 years in BESS or power systems engineering with at least 1 year in offshore or marine applications
- Technical Skills: BESS design and integration; power system analysis (ETAP, PSCAD); BMS and PCS engineering; lithium-ion battery technology; offshore electrical systems; fire and safety engineering for BESS
Preferred
- Experience with offshore platform power system design
- Marine battery system classification knowledge (DNV, Lloyd's)
- Microgrid and islanded power system design experience
- Offshore wind BESS integration experience
Market Intelligence
$500–$850/day
Shortage Level: High
Key Skills Gap: Engineers who combine BESS/power electronics expertise with offshore engineering knowledge; most BESS engineers are land-based and lack understanding of offshore certification, marine environment, and platform integration challenges
Regions in Highest Demand: North Sea, East Coast US, East Asia, Middle East, Australia
Demand Drivers: Offshore platform electrification programs; offshore wind farm BESS integration; decarbonization of offshore oil & gas operations; floating wind and microgrid applications requiring energy storage
