Position Overview
The Chief Officer serves as the vessel's second-in-command, deputizing for the Master and taking primary responsibility for deck operations, cargo management, stability, and safety compliance aboard DP-equipped offshore vessels. This role is a critical stepping stone toward command and is pivotal for ensuring operational continuity during complex offshore campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise all deck department operations including cargo handling, ballast operations, anchor handling, and ROV/diving support activities
- Maintain vessel stability and draft calculations; ensure compliance with load line and damage stability requirements at all times
- Act as the vessel's Safety Officer, overseeing implementation of SMS, risk assessments, and permit-to-work systems
- Stand DP watches as directed by the Master, maintaining position during critical subsea operations
- Manage and maintain vessel safety equipment, lifesaving appliances, and fire-fighting apparatus in accordance with SOLAS requirements
- Plan and execute cargo operations for deck cargo, bulk products (brine, cement, base oil, methanol), and project-specific equipment
- Conduct onboard training, drills, and emergency response exercises; maintain drill records and crew competency matrices
- Oversee hull and superstructure maintenance programs including planned maintenance and defect rectification
- Manage deck crew, including ratings, bosun, and cadets; conduct performance appraisals and competence assessments
- Prepare vessel for class surveys, port state inspections, and client audits
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Chief Mate Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2 unlimited) or equivalent
- Certifications: DP Advanced or Unlimited (preferred); BOSIET/FOET; Valid Offshore Medical; GMDSS; STCW updated certifications
- Experience: Minimum 3 years as Chief Officer on DP offshore vessels; experience in subsea operations support
- Technical Skills: Vessel stability and cargo management; DP watchkeeping; deck operations planning; safety management systems
Preferred
- DP Unlimited certification
- Experience on DSV, CSV, or pipelay vessels
- Advanced cargo and stability software proficiency
- H2S safety and well operations awareness
