Engineering Manager / Project Director
Position Overview
The Floating Systems Engineer provides technical leadership across the integrated design of floating production systems, encompassing hull, topsides, mooring, riser, and marine systems. This systems-level role is critical for concept selection, FEED, and EPC execution, requiring broad technical breadth and the ability to resolve cross-disciplinary interface issues. As the global FPSO/FLNG orderbook reaches record levels, engineers capable of overseeing the full floating system design are among the most scarce resources in the industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead technical evaluation and selection of floating system concepts (FPSO, semisubmersible, TLP, SPAR, FLNG) for field development studies.
- Develop floating system design basis and technical specifications for FEED and EPC tendering.
- Coordinate and integrate hull, topsides, mooring, riser, and marine system designs into a coherent floating production system.
- Manage technical interfaces between hull, topsides, riser, mooring, and subsea engineering teams.
- Review and approve EPC contractor floating system design deliverables and resolve technical queries.
- Conduct design review workshops (HAZID, HAZOP, Value Engineering, Constructability) for floating systems.
- Provide technical input to cost estimation, schedule planning, and risk assessment for floating system projects.
- Liaise with Class societies, flag states, and regulatory bodies on floating system approvals.
- Evaluate conversion vs. newbuild options for FPSO/FLNG vessel selection.
- Support project management with technical risk identification and mitigation strategies.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering
- Certifications: Chartered Engineer preferred; BOSIET/FOET for offshore visits
- Experience: 12–20 years in floating production system engineering, with experience across concept, FEED, and EPC phases
- Technical Skills: Comprehensive understanding of FPSO/semisub/TLP/SPAR design; hull-topsides integration; mooring and riser system interfaces; Class and regulatory requirements (DNV, ABS, LR)
Preferred
- Experience with FLNG or FSRU floating system design
- Involvement in greenfield FPSO newbuild and conversion projects
- Knowledge of digital twin and asset integrity management for floating systems
- Familiarity with energy transition applications (floating wind, floating CCUS, floating hydrogen)
Market Intelligence
$950–1,500/day
Shortage Level: Critical
Key Skills Gap: Engineers with full floating system integration experience; hull-topsides interface specialists; concept selection capability across multiple floating concepts
Regions in Highest Demand: Southeast Asia, Middle East, Brazil, West Africa
Demand Drivers: Record FPSO/FLNG orderbook, increasing vessel complexity (ultra-deep, harsh environment), limited experienced engineers as senior practitioners retire
