Work Pattern
Onshore + Offshore (during commissioning)
Reports To
Commissioning Manager / FPSO Project Manager
Position Overview
The FPSO Commissioning Engineer plans and executes the commissioning of FPSO topsides process, utility, and marine systems, ensuring safe and systematic transition from mechanical completion to operational readiness. This role requires detailed knowledge of FPSO-specific commissioning challenges, including concurrent construction and commissioning (SIMOPS), turret commissioning, and marine system pre-commissioning. As multiple FPSO projects approach commissioning simultaneously, experienced commissioning engineers are in strong demand.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop commissioning procedures and test packs for FPSO topsides process, utility, and marine systems.
- Execute commissioning activities including loop checking, function testing, and performance testing of FPSO systems.
- Manage pre-commissioning activities including cleaning, flushing, hydrotesting, and drying of piping systems.
- Commission FPSO-specific systems including turret, swivel, offloading, and cargo/ballast systems.
- Coordinate SIMOPS between construction and commissioning activities on the FPSO.
- Manage commissioning punch-list identification and close-out tracking.
- Support first oil and production ramp-up activities.
- Ensure commissioning activities are conducted within the permit-to-work system and HSE requirements.
- Coordinate with operations team for system handover and acceptance.
- Prepare commissioning completion documentation, including test records, certificates, and handover dossiers.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Process, Mechanical, or Instrumentation preferred)
- Certifications: BOSIET/FOET; CompEx (for hazardous area work); First Aid
- Experience: 8–12 years in offshore commissioning with FPSO-specific commissioning experience
- Technical Skills: FPSO commissioning procedures and test pack development; pre-commissioning activities; SIMOPS management; turret and marine system commissioning; first oil introduction; permit-to-work systems; commissioning management systems
Preferred
- Experience commissioning FPSO gas compression and export systems
- Involvement in FPSO start-up and initial production stabilisation
- Knowledge of preservation management during the construction-to-commissioning transition
- Familiarity with dynamic commissioning and process simulation tools
Market Intelligence
$900–1,350/day
Shortage Level: High
Key Skills Gap: Commissioning engineers with FPSO turret and marine system experience; first oil introduction specialists; SIMOPS management capability on FPSO
Regions in Highest Demand: Southeast Asia (Singapore/Korea yards), Brazil, Middle East, West Africa
Demand Drivers: Multiple FPSO projects entering commissioning phase simultaneously, increasing FPSO complexity, limited pool of FPSO-experienced commissioning engineers
