Onshore with offshore operational support
Reports To
Lead Process Engineer / Gas Processing Manager
Position Overview
The Gas Processing Engineer specializes in the design, optimization, and operational support of gas treatment and processing facilities including gas dehydration, sweetening, NGL recovery, and gas export systems. This role is critical for ensuring product quality specifications are met and that gas processing operations are conducted safely and efficiently, directly impacting the commercial value of gas production.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and optimize gas processing facilities including amine sweetening, glycol dehydration, NGL recovery, and dewpointing systems
- Perform process simulations for gas processing units using HYSYS, ProTreat, or similar software
- Develop and review P&IDs and process descriptions for gas processing systems
- Specify process equipment for gas treatment including contactors, regenerators, heat exchangers, and filtration
- Monitor and optimize amine and glycol system performance including circulation rates, concentration, and regeneration efficiency
- Conduct troubleshooting for gas quality off-specification events and develop corrective action plans
- Support commissioning and start-up of new gas processing facilities
- Evaluate and specify chemical injection programmes for gas treatment (corrosion inhibitors, hydrate inhibitors)
- Perform material balance calculations and production forecasting for gas processing trains
- Develop operating procedures and process safety documentation for gas processing systems
- Support CO2 removal and acid gas handling for gas export specification compliance
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering (Master's preferred)
- Certifications: OPITO BOSIET/FOET for offshore; Chartered Engineer (CEng) preferred
- Experience: Minimum 8 years in gas processing engineering within oil and gas, with hands-on experience in at least two major gas processing unit operations
- Technical Skills: Gas processing simulation (HYSYS, ProTreat, TSWEET), amine and glycol system design, NGL recovery processes (Joule-Thomson, turbo-expander, refrigeration), gas quality specifications, acid gas removal, hydrate management, relevant codes (API, GPSA, NACE)
Preferred
- Experience with sour gas processing and acid gas disposal/injection
- CO2 capture and processing experience for CCUS applications
- Experience with mercury removal and gas chromatography
- Knowledge of gas export pipeline specification and custody transfer
Market Intelligence
$900–1,350/day
Shortage Level: High
Key Skills Gap: Engineers with hands-on gas processing operational experience, particularly in amine sweetening and NGL recovery. CCUS-related CO2 processing is an emerging skill that very few candidates possess.
Regions in Highest Demand: Middle East, North Sea, West Africa, Central Asia, Australia
Demand Drivers: Massive gas development projects in the Middle East and Caspian, sour gas processing requirements, CCUS projects requiring CO2 capture expertise, gas monetization projects (FLNG, GTL), domestic gas specification tightening
