Onshore with offshore campaign rotations
Reports To
Lead Installation Engineer / Subsea Project Manager
Position Overview
The Installation Engineer (Subsea) is responsible for the engineering, planning, and execution support of subsea equipment installation campaigns including manifolds, trees, jumpers, umbilicals, flowlines, and risers. This role bridges design engineering and offshore execution, translating installation analysis into safe and efficient field operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop installation procedures, method statements, and risk assessments for subsea equipment installation campaigns
- Perform installation engineering analyses including lift analysis, seafastening design, motion analysis, and installation tolerance studies
- Prepare vessel-specific installation documentation including deck layouts, rigging plans, and lift plans
- Support offshore execution during installation campaigns, providing engineering guidance and real-time problem-solving
- Coordinate with vessel providers, ROV teams, and survey teams on operational requirements and interface management
- Review and approve contractor installation procedures and risk assessments
- Develop and maintain installation risk registers and mitigation plans
- Prepare as-built documentation, installation completion reports, and handover dossiers
- Conduct lessons-learned reviews post-installation and feed improvements into future campaigns
- Interface with design engineering teams to ensure installability is considered in subsea equipment design
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Structural, or Subsea Engineering
- Certifications: BOSIET/FOET (for offshore campaign support); Valid Offshore Medical; Chartered Engineer status preferred
- Experience: Minimum 5 years in subsea installation engineering; experience across at least two major installation campaign types (e.g., pipeline, manifold, umbilical)
- Technical Skills: Installation analysis software (Sima, OrcaFlex, Pipelay); structural and lift analysis; seafastening design; subsea equipment installation methods; DNV/API code compliance
Preferred
- Experience with deepwater (1,500m+) installation campaigns
- Offshore execution support experience on DSV or pipelay vessels
- Knowledge of riser and flowline installation methods (S-lay, J-lay, reel-lay)
- Proficiency in 3D modeling and simulation tools
Market Intelligence
$700–$1,100/day
Shortage Level: High
Key Skills Gap: Installation Engineers with both analytical capability AND offshore field execution experience; the "office-to-field" transition is where most candidates fall short
Regions in Highest Demand: North Sea, West Africa, Middle East, Brazil, Southeast Asia
Demand Drivers: Increasing subsea tie-back complexity; deepwater field developments requiring bespoke installation solutions; surge in SURF installation campaigns globally
