Position Overview
The Mooring Systems Engineer designs and analyses station-keeping systems for floating offshore installations, including spread moored, turret moored, and dynamic positioning-assisted systems. This role is essential for ensuring the positional integrity of FPSOs, semisubmersibles, and other floating units under extreme environmental conditions. With a growing fleet of floating production units and the emergence of floating wind applications, demand for mooring specialists is outpacing available talent.
Key Responsibilities
- Design permanent and mobile mooring systems for FPSOs, semisubmersibles, TLPs, and floating wind platforms per API RP 2SK, DNV-OS-E301, and ISO 19901-7.
- Perform mooring line dynamic analysis using OrcaFlex, MOSES, or Ariane software for intact, damaged, and transient conditions.
- Develop mooring design basis, specifications, and data sheets for chain, wire rope, and polyester rope systems.
- Conduct mooring fatigue analysis including corrosion allowance and out-of-plane bending effects.
- Evaluate mooring system performance for vessel motion response, line tension, and anchor holding capacity.
- Prepare technical specifications for mooring equipment procurement (anchors, chains, wire ropes, polyester ropes, connectors).
- Review third-party mooring analyses and provide independent verification.
- Support installation and hook-up of mooring systems during offshore campaigns.
- Assess mooring integrity for life extension of existing floating production units.
- Liaise with classification societies on mooring system approvals and dispensations.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Ocean, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering
- Certifications: Chartered Engineer preferred; BOSIET/FOET for offshore visits
- Experience: 8–12 years in mooring system design and analysis for floating offshore installations
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in OrcaFlex, MOSES, or Ariane; API RP 2SK, DNV-OS-E301; polyester, chain, and wire rope mooring system design
Preferred
- Experience with thruster-assisted mooring and dynamic positioning integration
- Involvement in floating wind mooring design (semi, TLP, spar concepts)
- Knowledge of anchor geotechnics and suction pile/SEPLA design
- Familiarity with mooring integrity monitoring systems (e.g., line tension monitoring, position monitoring)
Market Intelligence
$900–1,350/day
Shortage Level: High
Key Skills Gap: Engineers with polyester mooring experience; floating wind mooring crossover skills; anchor geotechnics integration
Regions in Highest Demand: Southeast Asia, Middle East, Brazil, Australia
Demand Drivers: FPSO fleet expansion, floating wind farm development, mooring life extension and integrity programmes
