Position Overview
The Offshore Installation Manager (OIM) is the senior company representative and ultimate authority on an offshore installation, responsible for the safety, welfare, and operational performance of all personnel and activities on the facility. This role carries statutory obligations under national petroleum safety legislation and requires an individual who can make critical decisions under pressure. The combination of regulatory responsibility, leadership capability, and technical competence makes qualified OIMs one of the most scarce leadership resources in the offshore sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Exercise overall authority and responsibility for the safety, welfare, and conduct of all personnel on the offshore installation.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety case, petroleum safety legislation, and environmental regulations.
- Lead the emergency response organisation for the installation, including mustering, evacuation, and incident command.
- Manage day-to-day offshore operations in coordination with onshore management, including production targets, maintenance programmes, and drilling/completion activities.
- Approve all permits to work and ensure the permit-to-work system is operated effectively.
- Conduct regular safety tours, audits, and inspections to maintain a strong safety culture.
- Manage and mentor the offshore leadership team, including supervisors, safety advisors, and medical personnel.
- Coordinate with logistics, marine, and aviation teams for the safe transfer of personnel and materials.
- Ensure adequate emergency preparedness through regular drills, exercises, and equipment checks.
- Represent the company to regulatory authorities, vessel masters, and visiting personnel offshore.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering preferred; HND/HTO with extensive experience accepted
- Certifications: OPITO OIM Controlling Emergencies; BOSIET/FOET; IWCF Well Control (Level 2 minimum); Medical fitness certificate (OGUK or equivalent)
- Experience: 15+ years in offshore operations with 5+ years in a senior offshore supervisory role; previous OIM or Deputy OIM experience essential
- Technical Skills: Emergency management and incident command; safety case and regulatory compliance; production operations management; permit-to-work systems; offshore logistics coordination
Preferred
- Experience as OIM on FPSO, fixed platform, or semisubmersible installations
- Familiarity with multiple regulatory regimes (UK, Norwegian, Australian, Brazilian)
- Involvement in major incident investigation and root cause analysis
- Leadership development or executive coaching qualifications
