Reports To
Lead Pipeline Engineer / Engineering Manager
Position Overview
The Offshore Pipeline Engineer is responsible for the design, specification, and project engineering of subsea pipeline systems from concept through to detailed design and installation support. This role covers route selection, wall thickness sizing, material specification, and installation method assessment. While the talent pool is larger than for specialist riser or flexible pipe roles, experienced pipeline engineers with deep-water project credentials remain in steady demand.
Key Responsibilities
- Design subsea pipelines and flowlines in accordance with DNV-OS-F101, API 5L, ASME B31.4/B31.8, and client specifications.
- Develop pipeline design basis, route selection reports, and material specifications.
- Perform wall thickness sizing for internal pressure, collapse, buckling, and propagation criteria.
- Prepare pipeline route alignment sheets and profile drawings.
- Specify line pipe material requirements (carbon steel, CRA clad, corrosion allowance) and review mill test results.
- Evaluate installation methods (S-lay, J-lay, reel-lay, tow) and develop installation specifications.
- Coordinate with stress, geotechnical, and CP engineers to ensure integrated pipeline design.
- Prepare technical evaluation of pipeline EPC and installation contractor bids.
- Review contractor pipeline design deliverables and provide technical approval.
- Support procurement, fabrication tracking, and FAT/WAT activities for pipeline components.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Pipeline, or Civil Engineering
- Certifications: Chartered Engineer preferred; BOSIET/FOET for offshore visits
- Experience: 7–12 years in offshore pipeline design and engineering
- Technical Skills: DNV-OS-F101, ASME B31.4/B31.8; pipeline sizing and material selection; installation method assessment; route selection and alignment sheet preparation
Preferred
- Experience with deep-water pipeline design (>1,000m water depth)
- Knowledge of pipeline CPR (corrosion protection) and CP design per DNV-RP-F103
- Involvement in pipeline commissioning and pre-commissioning engineering
- Experience with pipeline integrity management systems
Market Intelligence
$750–1,200/day
Shortage Level: Moderate
Key Skills Gap: Deep-water pipeline designers; pipeline engineers with CRA/clad pipe experience; engineers with combined design and installation knowledge
Regions in Highest Demand: Middle East, Southeast Asia, Brazil, East Africa
Demand Drivers: Subsea tie-back pipeline projects, deep-water export pipeline systems, CCUS pipeline feasibility studies
