Work Pattern
Onshore / Hybrid (offshore for tree installation and workover)
Reports To
Lead Subsea Engineer / Subsea Engineering Manager
Position Overview
The Subsea Systems Engineer (Xmas Tree) is a specialist role focused on the specification, design, procurement, and lifecycle management of subsea Xmas trees and associated wellhead connectors. This position demands deep knowledge of tree configurations (vertical vs. horizontal, standard vs. HPHT), actuation systems, and the interfaces between the tree, wellhead, and subsea control module. Xmas tree expertise is among the scarcest in subsea engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop technical specifications and data sheets for subsea Xmas trees (vertical and horizontal) per API 17D and API 6A.
- Define tree configuration, valving logic, and connector selection based on reservoir and operational requirements.
- Review and approve vendor designs, drawings, and calculations for tree assemblies, tubing hangers, and crown plugs.
- Manage tree procurement, including bid evaluation, technical clarification, and change management.
- Witness and approve Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), System Integration Tests (SIT), and Extended Factory Acceptance Tests (EFAT).
- Coordinate tree-running and workover control system (IWOCS/DTI) interfaces.
- Develop installation and workover procedures for tree deployment, retrieval, and re-installation.
- Provide offshore technical support during tree installation, landing, and testing operations.
- Support integrity management, failure analysis, and obsolescence planning for in-service trees.
- Interface with completion, drilling, and controls teams on well intervention and workover scopes.
Qualifications
Required
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (Master's preferred).
- Certifications: BOSIET/FOET with CA-EBS; Offshore Medical; IWCF Level 2 awareness (preferred).
- Experience: 8–15 years in subsea tree engineering, including vendor-side or operator-side tree specification and delivery.
- Technical Skills: In-depth knowledge of API 17D, API 6A, API 17G (deepwater wellhead connectors); proficiency in tree design review; understanding of metal-sealed valve technology and tree actuation systems.
Preferred
- Experience with HPHT trees (15K psi / 350°F+ rated).
- Familiarity with horizontal tree systems for deepwater applications.
- Prior experience with all-electric Xmas tree technology.
- Vendor-specific training from major OEM tree suppliers.
Market Intelligence
$1,000–$1,400/day
Shortage Level: Critical
Key Skills Gap: Xmas tree expertise is highly concentrated in a small, ageing population; vendor-locked experience means candidates rarely cross between OEM platforms; HPHT tree experience is extremely limited.
Regions in Highest Demand: West Africa, Brazil, North Sea, Gulf of Mexico
Demand Drivers: Deepwater tree orders at record highs for 2025–2028 delivery; HPHT well counts rising; all-electric tree transition creating a new skill paradigm.
